Note from the Artist:
I got the idea for “Under the Sun” from the original carving of the sun in the back of the chair. The chair came from the Children’s section of the MIL. I decided to recycle it and make it the canvas for my sculpture in large part because of the concerns I have with the state of our environment and our planet overall.
Under the sun, we live our lives. The joyful figure I formed out of molten glass represents our often careless and forward attitude toward our ways of living. We take for granted the changes we cause and rarely register the long-term effects of those changes. While harming ourselves and the environment in which we live, we keep on going without asking questions or looking back.
There is a visual and a conceptual incongruity in “Under the Sun”. We see a bright and a happy world on the canvas of this chair. If we look closer, we see how we change the world as we move through it. Even more than that, there are long-term effects we may not be able to see right away. Where she has walked and leapt, things will never be the same again.
Why on a chair? People make chairs; people shape their environments to meet their needs. The interplay of sun and chair--natural and human--is where the problems lie and where the solutions must be.
